What Apparel Do Snowboarders Need?
You want to make sure you do not die of frostbite on your first outing with a snowboard, so you need to make sure you are kitted out with the correct gear. Basically what you require are thermals and socks, a middle layer, jacket and boots, hat, gloves and goggles (for example Oakley Splice Goggles). Oh and do not forget your snowboard, although in this article we will concentrate on the clothing requirements.
The Bottom Layer
Your base layer is meant to retain your body heat and keep you warm. What you need for this is a long-sleeved thermal top and long-john style thermal bottoms. Synthetic materials such as polypropylene are usually recommended. Wool can be used too if it does not make you itch but avoid cotton because it stops insulating when wet.
The last thing you want is cold feet so wear a thick pair of socks if necessary. However you might find that thick socks make your feet sweat too much and thin, synthetic, lightweight snowboarding socks – along with the insulation in your boots – might be better.
Middle Layer
What you should be getting here are snowboarding pants and a fleece or sweater top. Fleece is great stuff because it is both lightweight and warm. The key to a lot of the best snowboarding gear is to get the lightest, thinnest clothing that does the job because it is a lot more comfortable to wear than thick, unwieldy clothes.
Suspender-style snow pants are usually the best so that they don’t fall down (which can spoil the look of a good trick!) and they should be roomy and have padding on the knees and butt to help you stay dry.
Jacket And Boots
Thin is once again the best bet for a jacket so that you can move freely without restriction.The jacket should be waterproof and windproof and it is better to spend a bit more and get something of decent quality.
A good pair of boots can last a long time, so choose carefully. You might need to get boots a half size bigger than your regular shoe size if you plan to wear thick socks on your feet.
Goggles, Hat And Gloves
Proper snowboarding gloves are highly recommended because they will be warm, waterproof and will have the necessary padding to protect you and reinforced areas to stop them wearing through. A hat should cover your ears to keep them warm and you really should consider a snowboard helmet to protect your head.
A good set of goggles will last a long time and it is worth getting something like Oakley Splice Goggles. Your goggles need to protect from glare yet give you the clearest possible view. They also need to be comfortable because bad fitting goggles will simply irritate you.
